The Folk Singer

Douglas Craik is a singer with a mission. 'It’s all about the words,' he says. 'I want to encourage people to listen to the words of the songs I sing, because each one has a message'. And listen is exactly what audiences do. His repertoire stretches from sombre laments to rousing anthems. His voice is mellow and emotive, and his style is compelling.

As a university student in Dundee, Douglas formed a group called Avizandum (along with fellow student and future MSP Rob Gibson), playing guitar and banjo-mandolin as well as singing. Avizandum became a favourite on the Scottish university circuit, touring the country and opening for such legendary artists as Hamish Imlach and Archie Fisher.

With graduation came the need for a 'real' job, but Douglas always found time for music, He enjoyed eight years in the Hamilton Operatic Society along with membership in his local folk club.

Retirement to Perthshire has provided an opportunity for Douglas to step back into his musical career. A member of both the Glassford (now Chapelton) and Glenfarg folk clubs, he is also a National Director of the Scottish Traditional Music and Song Association (TMSA). Performing as a solo artist, he has played at festivals and ceilidhs throughout Scotland, as well as hotels, pubs and folk clubs. He recently became a founding member of the touring company 'Simply Burns', performing the songs and poems of Robert Burns.
